Ok. so there was this really weird bug and its characteristics were very familiar to that of a mosquito. Difference is that it had the long legs of one, but had a stinger in the back, and it was BIG!!! Both the bug itself AND the stinger were big. I really was freaking out.O.O
It was a bigger than a wasp!!! It was fuzzy and also it looked like it had wings similar to that of a fly..? Idk, but I had never seen this bug before and I just wanted to know if anyone can give me some information about it like if I should be cautious of it. Is it poisonous? Does it sting? o.O That sorta stuff. Maybe if someone knew the name of it it could really help.
p.s. i was able to kill it with raid and i looked at it closely and it did have a kinda stinger in the back like a wasp does or a bee. but this stinger was long and when i squeezed the stinger down orange like liquid came out thats why i ask if its poisonous...

thanx

That can be one of two things: A mosquito hawk, a large, mosquito eating insect that closely resembles both a mosquito and a daddy long legs, or a mature ant lion, a close relative of the dragonfly, with a nasty stinger. If it has clubbed attenae, then it is most likely an ant lion; otherwise, my money is on mosquito hawk. The mosquito hawk is harmless, but the ant lion has a wasp-like sting.

There is a species of mosquitoes that is very big. Perhaps you saw that. They are common in England. But I can't explain the stinger :) I have never seen a stinger at the back of a mosquito :)

OR

Perhaps you saw a hornet. It is a large member of the wasp family. Was it brownish in color? If it was, it may be a hornet. And yes, if it was a hornet, they have a very bad sting. Much worse than the ordinary wasp. I know of people who have died from the sting of a hornet.

Do you figure it's some kind of paranormal super bug? I would have escorted the insect outside. Then asked about it in Zoology.

Being afraid is no reason to kill a living creature. For all you know it's main diet could have been mosquitos.

The only thing that comes to mind is a Mosquito hawk, which looks just like a mosquito, but about 3 times larger. It feeds on mosquitos.

It would be easier if you had a picture.

Here is a website that is great for identifying weird bugs. If its not on the site, then you can email them and they will identify it.

Have you ever seen a dragonfly?

They come in different colors and vary in shape and size.

It's a common insect so maybe that's not what you're talking about but it sounds like the same description.

I tried searching alternatives for you but I ended up grossing myself out. ;) Maybe you can find the name of your bug here:

I'm thinking maybe it was just a May Fly.
