I see civilisation as a group who carry out tasks that are beneficial for the group as a whole, and not just the individual. Therefore the following animals have a basic form of civilisation:

Generally pack animals (eg lions/wolves): Have a hierarchy and look after each other. Hunt for the young and teach them how to hunt.

Colony insects: gather food and build nursery's for their young, have a sort of collective "brain" and job structure.

it depends what you perception of civilisation is first.

modern humans are a cancer on the earth. yes we have developed a civilisation but it will end up being our own downfall, this some what contradicts the definition of civilisation (to pro create and sustain life) we are slowly committing mass suicide!

any other animal/insect on this plant that develops and goes about life as a unit, (ants, dolphins etc) have created better civilisations than us.

lets take ants or bees as an example,

their have a language, they communicate to each other just because we do not understand doesn't mean its not so.

they have a hierarchy and also a social section of their lives as well as a work ethic (all proven)

and ultimately they are not contributing to their own downfall like us humans!

By definition to believe anything you need proof.

However, if humans have been on Earth, say a million years. We don't know what happened before that, in the other 99.99% of the Earths existance. Anythings possible if you don't have a closed mind.

No, elephants, Monkeys and a number of insects have a civilisation. They have a heirarchy within the group they have specific duties within the group and some even have specific breeding and feeding grounds so no Humans arnt the only species with civilisation

Most dictionaries say that civilization refers to intellectual and cultural refinements. To my knowledge, human are the only ones with a written language.

No,there is too much evidence in random places all over the globe of otherwise..I believe this planet has been inhabited many times by many other species but yet mother earth has inevitably destroyed all of them over millions of years.. but left bits and pieces of their lives where we will never connect the dots..

I believe "civility" can only be viewed as a human trait.

Yes we are in the process of civilisation.

We have language.

But we are far from civilised.

very unlikely maybe similar humanoids but... other than that i doubt it. i think the universe would be dull if it would be filled with mostly humans especially at the rate we evolve and multiply.

Ants must have civilisation, they have armies, workers and queens. All in all they're pretty organised little bastards
